The names of philander and Jennie Bemis appear on one of the beautiful glass windows in our sanctuary. Are you curious about them? When President Lincoln called for volunteers at the breaking out of the Civil War, Philander W. Bemis was among the first to offer his services. He made an enviable war record partaking in nearly all of the great battles of the Potomac. Lt. Bemis came to Westfield to live after the close of the war. Since his boyhood he was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was an official member of the Westfield Church for 45 years, holding the office of chairman of the board of Trustees for the entire time. And his wife Jennie A. McCollum sang in the choir for a number of years. Mr. Bemis was the class leader, s steward superintendent of the Sunday School and “exhorter” for the church. He was active in the temperance cause and served several terms as town clerk of Westfield, and as a member of the Board of Education, and was for many years a deputy sheriff. Mr. Bemis was connected with Chautauqua Assembly eve since it was organized and had entire charge of the ticket department. He ran a Boot and Shoe store on the business row in Westfield. Much more could be said about Philander W. Bemis but I guess we all agree that he was a very man making many contributions to his church and his community.
